Cleansing

Your skin is exposed to dirt, sweat, pollution, smoke, excess oil, bacteria, cosmetics and dead skin cells. Skin health includes daily cleansing to remove these elements. This may seem pretty basic but many people either don’t cleanse the skin at all or don’t do it properly. Water alone only removes 65% of these and will not effectively remove make-up. It’s important to use a gentle non soap cleanser twice a day, morning and night, to cleanse without stripping the naturally acidic Ph of the skin and without irritating, damaging or disrupting the skin’s natural moisture barrier thus leaving this hydrolipidic film in tact. This is true for the skin on your face as well as your body.

Exfoliation

Your skin regenerates approximately every 28 days. In order to optimize this process, you need to regularly exfoliate the dead skin cells off of your skin. This is traditional to many cultures; think of Japanese Bathing Rituals or even your grandmother scrubbing your skin red with a washcloth. Sloughing off dead skin stimulates the collagen, allows for faster epidural renewal and keeps pores unclogged. This is important for the the skin of the face as well the rest of your body.

There are 3 types of exfoliation; mechanical, enzymatic and chemical. Loofas, salt scrubs and sugar scrubs all provide mechanical exfoliation, literally scrubbing off the dead skin layer. These are all too rough for your face where you must use a gentle face scrub. Enzymatic and chemical exfoliation, from papaya enzymes and fruit acids for example, break down the bonds between the skin cells allowing them to ease away, revealing the newer skin below. All of these will leave your skin glowing and radiant – both signs of good health.

Hydration

Your skin has a hydrolipidic film which is an important component of the skin barrier protecting the skin against bacteria, viruses and fungi. It requires the right balance of water and oil to function properly. Dehydrated skin cannot protect itself against the environment. Moisturizers work by maintaining the skin’s natural hydrolipidic film, keeping a barrier over your skin to keep water from escaping or by slowly releasing water into the skin. Moisturizers also protect the skin from irritants and allergens and against environmental damage.

Most people have thirsty skin, quickly absorbing massage oil. Oily skin is often dehydrated skin that is overproducing oils to compensate for its deficiency. Ways to hydrate the skin include drinking lots of fluids (not including coffee, tea and alcohol, which are dehydrating – sorry!), adding foods with healthy fats including EFA’s (essential fatty acids) and supplementing with fish oil and/or flax oil. Moisturize from the outside with a good moisturizer that optimizes the function of the skin’s natural hydrolipidic film and that has no parabens, formaldehydes or other chemical preservatives (check your shelf, even the ‘natural’ ones have parabens) You can use olive, sesame, coconut, jojoba, or another ‘food’ oil on the skin of your body (these are NOT recommended for the skin of your face).  Choose a non-soap cleanser which will also keep your skin from drying out.

Nutrition

The skin needs to be given nutrients both inside-out and outside-in. Nourishing your cells from the inside out with a whole foods, low glycemic diet and optimal supplementation improves the function of the cells thus improving the health of your skin. You can also nourish your body from the outside in with products containing anti oxidants, vitamins and minerals.

Antioxidant

Your skin is exposed to reactive molecules from pollution, sunlight, cigarette smoke, stress, fatigue, fatty diets, high glycemic diets and normal cell metabolism. These molecules oxidize your skin cells and damage your skin. Fruits, vegetables and supplements provide the antioxidants that neutralize the free radicals caused by oxidative stress and improve the ability of your skin to protect and defend itself. Antioxidant rich skincare products also help your skin neutralize the effects of these elements. A whole food diet, high quality supplements and antioxidant rich skincare act synergistically for optimal antioxidant protection.

Anti-Aging

At Massage For Moms we are ‘pro’ aging, but anti aging for your skin means improving the capacity for your skin cells to regenerate. Healthy eating and quality skincare products strengthen your skin’s ability to stimulate skin repair and promote new cell growth,  maximizing the health of your skin.

Protection

Skin protection happens on many levels. Avoid soap and soap based liquid cleansers and moisturize properly and you will maintain the hydrolipidic film and the healthy balance of oil and water that protect your skin. Products that synergistically combine active ingredients both internally and topically will neutralize free radicals caused by environmental and lifestyle factors and protect your skin. Although the sun is an excellent source of vitamin D, proper sun protection will protect your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays. Try physically covering your skin or a high quality sunscreen.

Your Body vs. Your Face

Although the health needs of the skin of your body and the skin of your face both require to be cleansed, exfoliated, hydrated and nourished, be sure to use different products to do the job.

Eliminate Toxins

Reducing your toxic load is key to the overall health of your body. I’m one of those people that actually made my own skincare. I used herbs, oils, vinegars, rosewater, salts, clay, oats etc…. I love the way those natural ingredients smelled and felt on my skin. I loved knowing exactly what was going onto my skin. Unfortunately, being a busy mom makes making my own skincare  unsustainable. My concoctions had a very short shelf life and all the clays and oats actually clogged my drains.

As I researched skin health I learned that as we age it can be hard for our skin to utilize the nutrients and active ingredients in plants when they are in their more natural form. High quality product formulations extract the botanical medicine and deliver it more readily to our skin making it more effective.

So we do need skincare products. Be sure to choose skincare products that are formulated without chemical preservatives toxic ingredients or anything  that may be harmful to your body.

Massage For Moms has an exclusive line of Nutricosmetics, that does all this and more. This unique and effective line of products makes it super easy and convenient to meet all your skincare needs, is patented with a self preserving technology that the other company’s would die for, and is delivered right to your door. Your skin is revitalized because it is truly nourished and hydrated. Combined with Massage For Moms’ powerful supplements you can nourish your skin from inside out and outside in for radiantly healthy and beautiful skin.
